Gas explosion can occur due to a number of reasons such as; gas cylinder leaks, improper handling or use of gas appliances (thus, putting on the gas stove before lighting the fire), high radiation or irradiation at highly flammable sites, etc.
Flammable gasses: they are gasses that burn in the presence of oxygen provided there is a source of fire. Examples of flammable gasses are hydrogen, methane, propane, butane, ammonia, Liquefied Petroleum Gas(a.k.a LPG) Chlorine Trifluoride, etc.
Presently, Chlorine Trifluoride is known to be the most dangerous flammable gas. Cooking gas or Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG is also a highly flammable gas (chemical substances composing of hydrogen and carbon). And because we use this gas in our homes, this gas has become the leading cause of domestic explosion. Each year several people die from gas explosions mainly because of the inappropriate use of the gas appliances.
In order to keep cylinders safe;
Always make sure the cylinders are positioned vertically upwards with their valve on top.
Regularly spray them and prevent your children from playing with or around them. Always ensure your kitchen is properly ventilated( air is allowed to move in and out freely) in case of any gas leakages. Educating people around you on the safety measures of gas cylinders.
It has been observed that the usage of mobile phones at areas like these, triggers explosions. This is due to the radiation the phone emits. Recently, a woman took her mobile phone to the kitchen while cooking and before she realised, she was burnt to dead with her (less than 10 year old )child who unfortunately was close to the where the explosion occurred. Such awful tragedy. I therefore urge you all to becareful when you found yourself in highly flammable places. Avoid taking electrical gadgets; phones, laptops, ipads,.. to such areas. In case you accidentally have them with you on trips, make sure you put them off before getting close to explosive areas. When you get to filling stations, avoid using such electronics to prevent any accidents.
Below are some images of different types of gas cylinders: the fibre cylinders are lighter in weight than the metallic cylinders and are also safe to use at home;
